JUVENILE CHALLENGE SPRINT FINAL

2 y old fillies

1200m

March 29th 2006

1st Sri Lanka (Andy Hargie Stables)

2nd Last Waltz (Heinz)

3rd Silver Storm (DVDMAN1)

4th Heavens Above (Petong)

In 10th was a race of courage and tall reputation in the form of Sri Lanka. Not only did she come up trumps in the Get minted but the performance in the final we felt deserved a place in our top 10 races of all time. Her price tag was a enormous gamble at the time and the relief of the owner trainer at the time was like a pressure point being released of atomic proportions.

The cream of the two year old fillies lined up to take there chance in the sprint final that had been aiming at all season with many being sand bagged keeping a low weight to give them a bigger shot at the sprint crown while others had been getting a bit heavy.

Most trainers had high hopes as these fillies left the gates and it was Eternal Hope, She's no Slouch, Lady Sarah and Sri Lanka who settled down at the front early and in that order, they were definitely in a hurry and as they got to the seven furlong pole and not even halfway through the race Sri Lanka made her move and hit the front effortlessly, this sent a massive warning to the rest of the field as she had won the Independent National Sprint Final only 4 days earlier against a lot of the runners in this field by hitting the front from half way home on that occasion.

As they got to the business part of the race with the winning post looming Sri Lanka’s lead was get shorter with every stride, Last Waltz, Silver Storm and Heavens Above were absolutely flying and cutting through the rest of the field like a knife through butter but Sri Lanka called for one last big effort and held on for the win with the three mentioned above taking the rest of the final places.

A great performance by this filly making her a double champion at the age of 2.
